An accident, including a van and an SUV, occurred on State Road 82 in Lehigh Acres, Florida, at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2021.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the van, driven by the 14-year-old, was moving toward the west on State Road 82 in the left turn lane at Sunshine Boulevard South, and the SUV, driven by a 37-year-old man, was traveling toward the east on the same road. While the SUV was approaching the intersection, the van suddenly came into the path of the SUV.
The van had five passengers from Immokalee. A 4-year-old passenger of the van died in the crash while a 44-year-old woman, a 10-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl, and the driver suffered minor injuries. A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition. No one in the van was wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
The SUV had 5 passengers – a 32-year-old woman and 3 kids between 12 and 19 years. No one in the SUV suffered injuries.
The 44-year-old female van passenger – the mother of the van driver and the other four passengers – was arrested and booked into Lee County Jail. She will face charges of allowing an unauthorized minor to operate an automobile without a driver’s license and aggravated child abuse. The FHP said that the mother let her 14-year-old daughter drive as she was intoxicated. The accident caused the roadway to remain closed for several hours.
If any nearby person or vehicle were injured/damaged as a result of the driver’s negligence, there would likely be a valid personal injury claim.
