A single-car crash occurred at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2021, at the intersection of Gulf Boulevard and 5th Avenue in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida. A 44-year-old sergeant with the Florida Department of Corrections died in the car accident.

According to investigators, at the time of the incident, the sergeant was heading west on the Indian Rocks Bridge when he lost control of his Ford F-150 truck for unknown reasons and collided with a concrete barrier. The crash caused him to partially eject out of the passenger front window of the vehicle. The vehicle then continued along the barrier wall and crashed into several sections of the metal railing. Gonzalez was then completely ejected from the truck and fell onto the curb near 5th Avenue N. and East Gulf Boulevard.

Deputies told that the vehicle continued on prior to hitting a palm tree and a set of Pinellas County junction signs before overturning. The sheriff’s office confirmed that the sergeant was assigned to Sumter Correctional Institution in Bushnell, Florida, and the crash investigations are ongoing.
