On March 6, 2024, tragedy struck a residence in Lakewood Ranch as the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported a devastating accident. The incident unfolded when a woman, behind the wheel of a Lexus SUV, was preparing to reverse out of a driveway. Unbeknownst to her, a 2-year-old child, who was believed to have already entered the vehicle, had actually wandered behind it, into a blind spot.

At 8:20:00 AM, the driver, still unaware of the child’s presence, began to reverse the SUV. Tragically, the child fell onto the driveway behind the vehicle and was run over. Despite efforts, Manatee County authorities pronounced the child deceased at the scene.

This type of accident is all too common and can happen in an instant. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of being vigilant and aware of one’s surroundings, especially when operating a vehicle. According to statistics, every year, 210 individuals lose their lives, and over 7,000 sustain injuries due to back-over accidents, with 50% of victims being children. Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) drivers are particularly susceptible, as 60% of all back-over accidents involve SUVs.
