A double-vehicle crash, involving an SUV and a van, occurred at 3:11 a.m., Sunday, December 19, 2021 on Interstate 275, just north of 38th Avenue N., in Pinellas County, Florida.
According to troopers, at the time of the crash, the 33-year-old woman from St. Petersburg was driving the SUV in the wrong direction, toward the north in the southbound lanes on Interstate 275, when she collided with the van, driven by a 62-year-old woman from Bradenton.
The crash caused the SUV to catch fire. The SUV driver sustained critical injuries, while the van driver was transported to a hospital with reportedly non-life-threatening injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
Troopers stated that it was not known how long the SUV driver had been moving in the wrong direction. Due to the accident, the southbound lanes of the highway remained closed until 7:13 a.m.
